It’s quite funny that from birth colours have been given genders. “It’s a girl!” written in pretty pink lettering. “It’s a boy!” in a strong bold blue. And yet I’m a girl that’s been true to blue all her life. Please no pretty pink for me. Leading me to the concept of Blue having NO gender. As i photographed numerous objects, this statement couldn’t have been more true. I found countless examples of blue female products such as makeup and accessories, as well as male clothing and shoes in the colour blue.
After researching different artist that work with the colour blue, i came across Giotos Joy, and the blue of heaven that he painted across the Arena Chapel ceiling. This blue was the first and last colour that you see in the chapel.
I started photographing the chapel that i attend and found one photo of empty pews and an isle of blue-green carpet, that sparked the idea of the blue of heaven now being on the floor. Changing my concept now to the blues of heaven being on earth.
So this final series of photographs show a connection of blues and objects linked to faith and reverence. This series show that not only people can show reverence or silent appreciation. By taking photographs that show a stillness of movement, an empty chapel, or a single lit hanging light, the same feeling of peace and worship that the image of a bowed head and closed eyes gives are expressed.
